Old Santa Fe Trail Residence

Santa Fe, New Mexico

This project was designed for a family which owns a gently sloping, 5 acre site covered with pinon and juniper trees.  The owners are avid historians who appreciate and admire the traditional legacy of residential architecture in New Mexico.

They did not want to simply “copy” an earlier historical style but instead were interested in the possibility of adapting traditional New Mexico architecture to contemporary life.

The goal was not to end up with a home pretending to be a “cute old adobe hacienda” but to incorporate the forms, proportions and elegance of an earlier lifestyle into a contemporary life while using sustainable building materials.
